Question: Hello, Here is my situation- the man who is giving me away was a foster father to me as a child (my real father passed away). He is a very kind man and I honestly don't believe he means any harm when he "jokes" with others. I will be marrying a man who is a different race than myself. I also have members of my bridal party who are from other countries. My concern is he will say something that is inappropriate to them and offend. I've heard comments before when we attended church together with my fiance's children , saying "is this the black section"? And also making comments to an asian girl in the church saying "where did you get those eyes"? I know this man does not mean any harm, and perhaps his generation finds nothing wrong with these comments ( he's 75) , but I was appalled at what he said. To be honest, they are racial comments and I'm fearful and concerned he will say something to my guests and hurt their feelings. I already asked him to give me away before realising he seemed rather "loose" with his words. How do I handle this one? If I mention to him my concern he will act as though I'm overreacting and insist he will not say such things and I know at this point I will hurt his feelings. How do I approach this one? How should I word my concern(s) to him?
