RESPONSE
From: Tooman
Response: The purpose of an engagement party is to introduce the new fiance/fiancee to the friends and family of the other person. Therefore, the parents of the bride host a party if the groom is to be introduced to the brides family and the parents of the groom host a party if the bride is to be introduced to the grooms family and friends.

Sometimes the bride and groom will host a party if one or both has a group of friends that the other one doesnt know.

An engagement party is usually an informal get together. It might be a barbeque, a dinner, a dessert, or some other type of event. Most such parties are held at a private home.
