Response: It depends on the formality of the wedding. If you are having a sit-down dinner with multiple entree choices, then placecards are necessary. If you are having a buffet, placecards arent used because it is a more casual meal. If you are having a sit-down dinner with only one entree for everyone, then again, placecards arent necessary. Be sure to reserve tables for the wedding party, their spouses, and for the parents and grandparents. All others can choose their own seats. Your daughter may have heard horror stories from her friends about the headaches involved in using placecards. You would be making changes right up until the night before the wedding.
As a compromise you might have assigned tables, but not assigned seats. It is much easier to create a chart and allow guests to choose any seat at their assigned table. However, as the bride, your daughter gets to make the final decision of what to do.
