Response: Gifts are given based on your budget and on how well you know the couple; the cost of the food has nothing to do with it. If the couple told you how much they are paying per plate, then they are bragging; if you asked, then you shouldnt have; that is personal information. If the couple expects to be repaid in gifts for what they spend on the wedding, then they have their priorities mixed up. An invitation to a wedding is a request for guests to join the couple in celebrating a joyous occasion in their lives; it isnt about gifts.
Give as much as you feel comfortable giving, or choose an item from the couples registry. You might also consider giving a gift that you make and that doesnt cost a lot but includes much love, labor, and thoughtfulness.
