Response: When you say you are looking for stars because the reception will be outdoors and at night, are you thinking of large stars that are lighted or that can contain a light and that can be hung to provide lighting? If so, those items are available near Christmas. If your wedding is rapidly approaching, you might ask family and friends if any of them have large lighted stars that you can borrow. If your wedding is next year, then you have time this Christmas season to find stars. You might also look on-line, perhaps on ebay, or check year-round Christmas shops. Also check dollar stores. I just had a 50th birthday party and the hostess decorated with large lighted stars, but I dont know where she found them. I do know that the silver and gold cardboard stars that she used came from a party supply store. They varied in size from about 6 inches across to about 18 inches across.
If you cant find stars, you should be able to find Chinese lanterns that you can string throughout the area. They are available in several colors, including white and red.
When your mom says that you should keep your wedding military style, the only thing that makes a wedding 'military' is that the groom, bride, and/or some of the members of the wedding party wear uniforms. If the wedding is not held in a military chapel, all other aspects are the same as for any other wedding.
