Response: Hello April, The things that you plan to do sound fine and not overdone. Your friends may be concerned because using a theme for a wedding was a short-lived fad that has come and gone, so they are probably associating what you are doing with birthday parties. However, most people coordinate their invitations, centerpieces, and some other items of the wedding so that you present a cohesive, finished look, not one that appears to be tossed together.
All of your decisions sound fine, particularly with the decor of the room. You can achieve an elegant look by the linens you choose and the centerpieces, perhaps a candle with hurricane glass for safety surrounded by the glass slippers. When guests walk into the room they will see the finished result and they should be pleased.
One way to downplay the negative comments is to mention what you are doing, but dont call it a theme. That may be the hangup.
